Why the "Too many photos" tag appears in GotPhoto

Table of contents

Overview

If you add too many photos to an album in GotPhoto, you may see a "Too many photos" tag appear next to the album in your Photo Management area. This warning indicates that your album has exceeded system limits.

Photo limits per album

The GotPhoto system enforces limits to ensure stability and performance:

  • Group images: Maximum of 2000 per album
  • Individual images: Maximum of 300 per album

Understanding image limits

While the GotPhoto platform is highly scalable, certain technical thresholds can impact the user experience when an album contains a very high volume of images.

The main factor that impacts performance is the number of images in an album, not the total file size: Organizing 8,000 small images can take longer than organizing 500 large, high-resolution images. That’s because the system needs to review and arrange each individual image in the album to keep everything in the correct order. If you’re experiencing slow loading times, reducing the number of images in a single album can help improve performance.

Recommended limit: Aim to stay below 2,000 photos per album to ensure stable performance.

Troubleshooting Sorting Errors

If you experience a failure or a timeout while attempting to sort a large album, it is usually due to a server-side timeout during the database update process.

To resolve sorting issues in large albums, follow these steps:

  1. Refresh your browser page to clear any hangups.
  2. Attempt the sorting action again; the process often succeeds on a second or third attempt even if it timed out initially.
  3. [Optional] If errors persist, consider splitting the images into smaller, separate albums to reduce the database load per request.

Impact of exceeding the limit

If you exceed these limits, not all images will be visible in the shop. This means some photos may not appear to customers even though they are uploaded in the admin area.

FAQs

Does it matter if I have mostly group photos or individual ones?

No. The system treats them the same, it only considers the total number of items that need to be processed

Will my customers see errors in the Shop?

No. The Shop does not have a strict limit on the number of photos. However, if an album contains thousands of images, customers may experience slower loading times or slightly reduced performance while browsing.

Can I still upload more than 2,000 photos?

While we do not recommend it, you can technically upload more than 2,000 photos. However, please note that performance may be affected. Albums with a very high number of images can load more slowly or behave unpredictably.

The takeaway

The "Too many photos" tag indicates your album has surpassed GotPhoto’s photo limits (2000 group or 300 individual images). To ensure all photos are available in the shop, keep each album within these limits. If the system gets stuck, just refresh and try again.
