Overview
If you upload a portrait image, and it appears sideways (landscape orientation), this usually means the photo’s orientation data is missing. GotPhoto relies on EXIF data to display images correctly.
The cause
Each photo file contains EXIF data, which includes technical details such as the camera settings and orientation (portrait or landscape). If the EXIF orientation tag is missing or incorrect, GotPhoto cannot detect the correct orientation, and the image will default to landscape.
The solution
To fix this issue:
- Check the EXIF data of your image to confirm if the orientation tag is missing.
- If the orientation is not marked as Portrait, open the photo in your image editing software (e.g., Photoshop, Lightroom, or another editor).
- Rotate the image to the correct orientation.
- Export or save the photo again to your hard disk. This step ensures that the correct EXIF orientation is written into the file.
- Re-upload the corrected photo to GotPhoto.
The takeaway
When portrait images appear sideways in GotPhoto, the issue is caused by missing or incorrect EXIF orientation data. Resaving the image with the correct orientation ensures GotPhoto displays it properly after re-uploading.
